DAY 1 Sun 04 Oct MELBOURNE - APOLLO BAY- WARRNAMBOOL (D)
This morning travel to Warragul/Melbourne/Geelong and meeting your fellow travellers before joining the great Ocean Road at Torquay for a breathtaking drive along one of Australia’s most spectacular coastlines. The approach to Lorne is remarkable as the township is built amongst forests with native trees, stretching right down to the water. We have some time to explore before travelling onto Apollo Bay where the road leaves the coast and winds through the slopes of the Otway Ranges and Otway National Park. To the west of the Otway Ranges the Great Ocean Road re-joins the coast and runs the full length of Port Campbell National Park. The dramatic coastal scenery on either side of the town of Port Campbell will be a highlight of our journey. We pass Loch Ard Gorge, which has a sad tale to tell. In 1878 the Iron hulled clipper Loch Ard, was driven out onto the rocks offshore at this point. Of the 50 or so onboard only two were to survive. Have your camera ready as its here we approach the Twelve Apostles a group of magnificent rock stacks rising from the Southern Ocean. We also see London Bridge, Crown of Thorns and the Bay of Islands before arriving at the seaside town of Warrnambool. More than 100 ships and boats have been wrecked within 80 kms of Warrnambool, hence the current name for the area the Shipwreck coast. We have dinner in our hotel before the wonderful “Shipwrecked” show. This is a spectacular sound and light display that takes us on a journey through a raging ocean flanked by an unforgiving coastline. Dinner at hotel/lunch at own expense. Overnight: Deep Blue Hotel & Hot Springs, Warrnambool

After lunch at the Anchorage Hotel, we take an incredible interactive journey at the SA Whale Centre.
