Against the scenic mountain backdrop, gerenuk can often be seen standing on their hind legs to reach the juicy, young leaves of thorn bushes, while Grant's gazelle appear to want to topple over due to the size of their large horns. These are both species of northern plains game that are not easily found in other areas, along with Grevy's zebra, the largest of the zebra species and perfectly suited to its arid environment as it is capable of surviving for five days without any water. Elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, buffalo and hippo are also found in this small yet compact park. Samburu National Reserve entrance fee (valid for 24h hours) included.
Picnic lunch -
Afternoon game drive in Samburu National Reserve, a semi-desert and environmentally harsh region that nevertheless stains a large population of wildlife and nurtures lush vegetation along the banks the Ewaso Ngiro river, the only source of water in the park. Doum palm groves and thick riverine forests provide the perfect habitat for over 350 species of birds, while the muddy waters themselves are filled with hippos and large Nile crocodiles. Samburu is also well known for its elephants, often red hued from the dry, red soil that covers much of the park. An afternoon game drive through the reserve is one of the best times to experience its quiet peace and serenity as the late afternoon sun lights up the ruby earth to a warm, shimmering and utterly beautiful glow. The period before sunset will also be the best time of catching a glimpse of the elusive leopard. -
